Taiwanese Flute Melodies Introduce Rohilkhand University Students to Music, Culture and Global Education

Bareilly: Students at Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University (MJPRU) explored Taiwan’s musical heritage, cultural diversity and higher education opportunities during a special cultural programme organised at the university’s Centre of Excellence for Multilingualism.

Held under the inspiration of Vice-Chancellor Professor Anil Kumar Rai, the programme featured a captivating performance of traditional Chinese flute music by Hsing-Hung Lai, a Mandarin Chinese language teacher at Shiv Nadar University, Noida. The performance introduced students to the distinctive sounds and artistic traditions associated with Taiwanese music.

Through expressive flute melodies, Lai demonstrated how traditional music reflects cultural identity and heritage, offering students an opportunity to appreciate Taiwan’s artistic traditions.

The event also highlighted educational opportunities in Taiwan. Chiali Chen, a Mandarin Chinese language teacher at the university, informed students about higher education prospects, scholarship schemes and academic opportunities available to Indian students in Taiwan. She emphasised the importance of language learning in facilitating international educational experiences.

Professor Anita Tyagi, Dean of the Faculty of Language Studies, said the university had been offering Mandarin Chinese language courses since 2023. These programmes enable students to develop language skills while gaining an understanding of Taiwanese culture and its education system.

The initiative has also opened international academic avenues for students. Over the past three years, 16 MJPRU students have received scholarships to study in Taiwan for periods ranging from three months to one year. Some of them have subsequently decided to continue their higher studies there.

The programme brought together music, language learning and academic guidance, encouraging students to explore international opportunities while developing cross-cultural understanding.

Such initiatives reflect the university’s efforts to promote multilingual education, strengthen academic and cultural exchanges between India and Taiwan, and expand global learning opportunities for students.
